Circumstances of Death

Alfred is listed as dying of wounds on 2nd July 1917 at the 39 Stationary Hospital which used Aire Communal Cemetery for burials. The 39th Stationary Hospital war diary for the 2nd July 1917 is transcribed below and explains that Alfred died of wounds received during an enemy bombing raid.

Aire - 2 Jul 1917: D.W.S. (Surgeon General Pike) sent letter informing he was leaving and thanking us for the work we had done. 

Air raid at 1030 over Munition Dump at Berguette - sent ambulance under Captain J S Stewart RAMC.  Two cases brought in dead - also two serious abdominal cases and also three more head? [wound] cases.
