Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

War diary shows that the Battalion formed up near Noyelles and following the end of the normal bombardment at 5.50am launched an attack from the starting point and captured German from line trenches and then their support trench and then onto the Quarries as far as St. Elie. They held onto the positions but later in the day had to give them up after the failure of an attack by 9th Division on their left flank. They retired back to the captured support trench 400 yards west of the Quarries. This all came at a heavy cost of over 500 casualties and could only muster 1 officer and 140 other ranks. The following day (26th) they moved further to the right in the support trench to join up with 21st Brigade and they occupied the same position until being relieved on the 29th.
