Circumstances of Death

James is listed as being killed in action on 3rd February 1918. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 1st to 4th February are transcribed below.

La Vacquerie Sector Left: Battalion was situated in La Vacquerie Sector 6th Infantry Brigade Area & Right Sub Sector front line and posts. B & C Coys front line and posts with A & D Coys as Support

La Vacquerie - Right Sub-Sector – 1 February 1918: Normal trench warfare. After dusk the work of improving front line and connecting up Posts continued. At this time the posts could only be reached at night and owing to the bad condition of front line the work was slow in linking up with front line.

Hot food was carried up four times during the night to the garrisons, string of posts and front line was proceeded with.

La Vacquerie - Right Sub-Sector – 2 February 1918: Normal trench warfare. Improvement of trenches continued, a considerable amount of wire being put out on A Coys front at R.10.c.3.7

La Vacquerie - Right Sub-Sector – 3 February 1918: Enemy artillery very active throughout the day obtained direct hits on Left support Coys HQ causing many casualties. Work of improving posts and front line continued.

6.15pm: 2nd South Stafford Regt relieved in right sub-sector by 13th Essex Regt. Relief complete 8.30pm. On relief 2nd South Stafford Regt moved to camp in Havrincourt Wood Q.15.a.

Havrincourt Wood Q.15.d – 4 February 1918: Devoted to cleaning up equipment etc. Improving camp billets.

11pm. Camp shelled for one hour causing casualties to men sleeping in tents.
