Circumstances of Death

Harold is listed as being killed in action on 18th August 1915. The 82nd Field Company war diary for that day is transcribed below and reveals that he was shot by a machine gun whilst working on the construction of posts.

Riez Bailleul – 18.8.15: No 1 & 4 sections day and night work on Battalion Post, No 3 Section putting up wire at Colvin Post.

While work was proceeding in the latter, a machine gun opened fire suddenly on the working party, Lieut H.C. Bates was unfortunately hit in the head & killed instantaneously. There were no other casualties. There was a good deal of rifle and machine gun fire throughout the night.
