Circumstances of Death

William is listed as dying from wounds whilst a Prisoner of War on 21st August 1918. Red Cross records reveal that William was taken prisoner on 25th March 1918 at Cugny (1st record below). The 2nd & 3rd records states that he died of a lung abscess in the Infirmary of Kassel Prisoner of War Camp. Click image for the Red Cross website.

pow.jpegWilliam is listed as being with the 6th Battalion O&B.L.I when he was captured and later died, however the 6th Battalion was disbanded on February 8th 1918 and its men were distributed to the 2nd; 2nd/4th and 5th Battalions. We believe that William transferred to 2nd/4th but cannot confirm this to be 100% accurate. The 2/4th War Diary entries for that time are posted below.
