Samuel is listed as dying of wounds on 22nd May 1917 at the First Southern General Hospital in Birmingham. He received severe shrapnel wounds to his thigh on 4th May 1917. The 60th Siege Battery war diary entries for the 4th & 5th May 1917 is transcribed below. Philosophe - 4 May 1917: The enemy sent over a few gas shells about 11pm last night otherwise night was fairly quiet. Fine sunny weather continues – Hun planes very active this morning 3pm: 6 rounds each on Hostile Batteries H87 (H.35.b.03.83) and H 88 (H.35.c.71.80). No observation possible 6.45pm: 5 rounds on H32 (H.10.a.3.6. OP was being shelled and unable to observe 7.15pm: 10 rounds on H28 (H.5.c.02.19) and 10 on B.22.d.18 Philosophe - 5 May 1917: A quiet night – weather fine & warm, visibility today very poor, hazy. 1.10pm: 5 rounds H.E. on each on H32 (H.10.a.38) & 5 on H31 (H.10.a.40.35) 1.50pm: 5 rounds H.E. on each on H32 (H.10.a.38) & 5 on H28 (H.5.c.2.19). These were observed from Gaiety O.P. and appeared good. No cross observations were obtained & it is impossible to observe the actual burst of the shell, only dust behind houses is visable 4.40pm: 5 rounds on H87 (H.35.b.3.83) and 5 on H88 (H.35.c.71.80) A quiet night, some shells over, none very near. |
