Albert is listed as being killed in action on 23 Aug 1917. The very brief 1st/5th Battalion War entries for the period 22nd to 24th are transcribed below, they refer to Appendices II, III, IV & V which unfortunately cannot be located in the diary and are presumed to be missing. Canal Bank - Night 21/22 - 10.30pm: The Bn moved to positions of assembly preparatory for the attack. The Bn attacked in accordance with O.O. 117 [Appendix II & III]. On the right after protracted fighting the gunspits at C.12.d.7.3 were captures, on the left the leading wave gained its objective without serious opposition. Owing to the tanks being able to get on the main objective was not obtained. About 9am [22nd] the enemy counter attacked strongly and drove us back to our original position. Lt. Col. Retallack seriously wounded 9am. Canal Bank - Night 22/23: C Coy attacked and reoccupied gunpits at C.12.d.7.3 Canal Bank - Night 23/24: Moves took place as in Appendices IV & V Canal Bank - Night 24 - 3am: Enemy attacked the gunpits with flamethrowers and drove back and out C Coy.
