Circumstances of Death

Richard is listed as being killed in action on 6th February 1917. The Leamington Spa Courier reported on 23rd February that his [unnamed] officer had written to the family that "on that night they had to sustain a very heavy bombardment on their bit of line, and how my brave lads stood their ground I do not know". The 1st/5th Battalion war diary entries for the period 5th to 7th February are transcribed, in full, below.

Biaches - 5 Feb 1917: 5 R War R relieved 1/6 R War R in  the front line trenches between I.31.d.25.30 & I.b.25.35. Reinforcements received = 16 OR’s. Ref OO 82

Biaches - 6 Feb 1917: Casualties – Killed = 3 OR’s, Wounded 4 OR’s (1 since died)
