Circumstances of Death

Samuel is listed as dying of gun shot wounds and a spine fracture on 2nd December 1917 at the St. Lukes War Hospital, Halifax. Samuel received his wounds in action on 15 Jul 1917, which was 2 years to the day that he had originally arrived in France. The brief 183rd Tunnelling Company war diary entry for the period 8th to 16th July is transcribed below.

Elverdinghe - 8 Jul to 16 Jul 1917: Work proceeds normally with occassional delays owing to enemy retaliation bombardments, gas shelling and some heavy rains.
