Allen is listed as being killed in action on 24th September 1916. The 15th Battalion war diary entries for the period 23 to 25th September are transcribed below.

Quadrilateral - 23 Sep 1916: Battalion in reserve as above [in the Quadrilateral]. Nothing to report. Weather fair.

Casualties: Other Ranks 7 wounded and 1 missing

Quadrilateral - 24 Sep 1916: Battalion moved to trenches between Wedge Wood and Guillemont, arriving at night. Weather fair.

Casualties: Officers 1 wounded; Other Ranks Killed 11, wounded 10.+

Trenches near Guillemont – 25 Sep 1916: Battn moved up to the Quadrilateral & Warwick Trench (front line prior to attacks). Weather fair.

Family Life

On November 29th 1911 the Coventry Evening Telegraph reported that Allen's mother Selina, described as an intemperate woman, was gaoled for 3 months after being accused by the NSPCC of child neglect of her six children and his father Allen, described as hardworking, was bound over for twelve months on the same charges.

Conditions in the family home were described as destitute of furniture with two filthy beds [between 8], a table & 3 chairs with the 6 children ill-clad and in a very poor condition.
