Sidney is listed as being killed in action on 31st October 1914 near Armentieres. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 30th October to 1st November are transcribed below. Houplines - 30 Oct 1914: Some shelling during the day, sniping fairly continuous. ½ D Coy under Lt. Pilkington attacked at night. Attack not pressed home and easily repulsed. Rain in the evening. Houplines - 31 Oct 1914: Our Battery shelled houses in front of A Coy. A Coy shelled [by enemy] during the day. Sniping incessant. 3 casualties. Houplines - 01 Nov 1914: A Coy shelled most of the day, no casualties from shell fire, sniping incessant. Lt Bamber & 1 man wounded. Germans shelled [Bn] HQ [at] Dairy Farm and set it alight “useless damage to private property”. Quiet night. Big battle proceeding in the North. |
