Circumstances of Death

William is listed as having died of wounds at the 56th Casualty Clearing Station, Gezaincourt. Unfortunately the 295th Brigade war diary does not give any real clues as to the events leading to his death. The war diary entries for the period 25th April to 6th May are transcribed.

Dauchy-les- Ayette - 25 to 30 Apr 1918: Harassing fire at night. Orders received from 37th D A – on clear days guns not to be fired. All guns in Big E Square (sheet 57D NE) silent. In F Square active.

Dauchy-les- Ayette - 1 to 6 May 1918: Acting under orders of L Group through 37th Divisional Artillery. Principal work night harassing fire and improvement of positions. Hostile shelling active in the sector
