Circumstances of Death

Harold is listed as being killed in action on 18th April 1917. The 1st/7th Battalion war diary entries for the period 17th to 19th April are transcribed below.

Epehy - 17 Apr 1917: Battalion relieved 1/5th R War R – OO 113 – in outpost line. C Coy in line Petit Priel Farm, Catelet Copse, and to the north as outpost. B Coy in support in No 12 Copse, No 13 Copse, Nameless Copse and Reo Brick Ruins to N. A and D Coys in Brown Line.

Two companies of 1/5th R War R in Epehy as reserved and under orders of 1/7th R War R.

Epehy – 18 Apr 1917: Situation as before. D Coy relieved C Coy less one platoon left in Catelet Copse. Relief complete at 4am 19th. Weather fine.

Epehy – 19 Apr 1917: During the night 19th-20th the Battalion gained ground. OO 114. A Coy were established in Quarry at X.29.d.2.3 and pushed a patrol on to high ground X.29.d. D Coy n the left made a post on high ground X.24.d.9.9 and sent patrols to Ossus Wood and Vendhuile but were unable to enter either place as they were strongly held.
