Circumstances of Death

John is listed as having died of wounds on the 17th April 1917 at the 3rd Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne. The Warwickshire Roll of Honours states that he was originally wounded on the 7th April 1917. The 71st Brigade war diary entries for the period 6th to 8th April are transcribed below.

Arras - 6 Apr 1917: Third day of bombardment (X day). 44th Inf Brigade carried out a raid in the morning. Our artillery went on with their programme as ordered. Hostile artillery active along the whole Div front from 8am to 11am and generally increased activity was shown throughout the day, several houses being set on fire.

Enemy seemed very nervous sending up many “golden rain” rockets.

Arras – 7 Apr 1917: Fourth day of bombardment (Q day), Y day being postponed. The same programme was carried out by our artillery as on X day [6th Apr] except that we had no practice barrages.

The 12th Division raided in the morning assisted by our artillery. Hostile artillery now active again later in the day.

Arras – 8 Apr 1917: Y day - our artillery continued the bombardment according to programme, hostile artillery not very active.
