George is listed as being killed in action on 7th August 1918. The 211th Company war diary entries for the period 6th to 8th August are transcribed below. The Warwickshire Roll of Honour states that George was killed by two 8" shells. Near Hazebrouck - 6 Aug 1918: Lt Clarke joined Coy from 156th Field Coy as second in command. Instructing infantry in wiring, sandbagging, laying out trenches etc. Near Hazebrouck - 7 Aug 1918: No entry was made in the war diary on this day Near Hazebrouck - 8 Aug 1918: Sapper Stevenson G.E. killed in action. Strutting cellars at Brigade HQ Hazebrouck (V.27.c.3.2) Repairing road at D.2.c.8.0 with bricks carted from Hazebrouck. |
