Circumstances Leading to Death

A record (see below) from the Turkish Red Crescent shows that Arthur died of Intestinal Inflammation and was buried at Afion Kara Hissar Concentration Camp.

Arthur was taken prisoner on 29 April 1916 following the infamous surrender of the city of Kut to the Turks by General Charles Townsend which brought to an end the disastrous, for the British, episode called the Siege of Kut.

Arthur would then have been forced to take part in the murderous 1200 mile forced "Death March from Kut" to prison camps in Anatolia, Turkey. Of the 2,592 men surrendered at Kut - 1,700 (70%) died whilst in captivity or on the march.

Due to a lack of records it has been difficult to fully evidence Arthur's early life. We do know that he served 21 years in the Royal Artillery and retired at some stage between 1911, when he was in India, and 1914 when he re-enlisted and we do know that he married Lizzie West in 1909.

Newspaper reports show that he lived in Newport, Isle of Wight at the time of his re-enlistment, with his wife Lizzie and was an oil cake salesman.

The birth, parents names, 1881 & 1891 census records should be treated with caution as, although they exist we cannot confirm are related to this Arthur Stanley Stone.
