Circumstances of Death

James is listed as being killed in action on 23 Jul 1917. The 1st Battalion war diary places them in Crete Trench near Fampoux. The war diary entries for the period 22nd to 24th July 1917 are transcribed below.

Railway Cutting – 22 Jul 1917: Fine day. No working parties after 12noon. Battalion prepares to take over front line trenches from 2nd Sea Highrs [Seaforth Highlanders] at I.20.a & c.

9pm: C Coy sent up two plants to Crete Trench

9.30pm: Relief started in following order – D Coy with 1 Platoon of B Coy attached to left front Coy position. A Coy with 1 platoon of B Coy attached to right front Coy position. Internal of 10 minutes in between Coys.

Trenches - 23/7/1917:1.30am - Relief completed, no casualties. Fairly quiet night. 7th Bn Border Regt on our left, 1st Bn Hampshire Regt (11th Inf Bde) on our right.

Fine day, fairly quiet. Both enemy and our aeroplances active. One enemy plane shot down by our A.A Guns & fell in enemy lines. Quiet night. END

The Battalion Statement of Casualties records there being 4 killed and 5 wounded men on 23/7/1917.

Trenches - 24/7/1917: Fine day, an American Colonel came round & reviewed our sector of line. Quiet morning and afternoon. Both enemy and & artillery active during evening & night. Enemy principally fired from Hausa Wood.

Enemy used Rifle Grenades freely on our posts and on Columbo trench during night.
