Circumstances of Death

William is listed as having died of wounds on the 14th September 1914 near Bucy le Long. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 13th to 15th September 1914 are transcribed below.

Septmonts – 13 Sep 1914: 8am - Left for Venizel, halted on top of hill till 2pm, the Regiment took up a position on S side of River Aisne to cover advance.

6.45pm - Troops advanced via Venizel & crossed River Aisne at 10pm & moved up to Bucy le Long.

Bucy le Long - 14 Sep 1914: Moved up under cover of village, heavily shelled by enemy’s artillery without damage to us. C & D reinforced the Rifle Brigade at the Cave but returned as dusk.

Bucy le Long – 15 Sep 1914: Heavily shelled all day, got well under cover, C & D again reinforced, 2 men wounded on the way up.
