Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

We have been provided with an extract from the War Diary for the 5th/6th of November 1916 by a member of The Great War Forum.
"Enemy Artillery activity 10 HE fell in Reserve Coys quarters a 1315 hrs causing heavy casualties.  Shells of small calibre fell at frequent intervals.  During the day and night work was continued on shelters and trenches, barbed wire entanglements were erected and damage done by shells repaired.  A patrol of 1 Officer and 20 ORs which went out in direction of HILL 380 at 2300 hrs returned safely at 0230 hrs 6th nothing of note having occurred.  Casualties:- Killed 13210 Cpl E Grey. 17588 Pte WF Mace.  Wounded to FA 11972 Sgt K Aslett, 17185 Sgt FJ Lovesay, 16933 Sgt H Reynolds, 17196 Cpl T Barnett, 12575 Cpl H Knight, 15993 Pte AJ Carter, 28245 Pte F Lockey, 17136 Pte Shorthouse, 28013 Pte AH Theobald, 27203 Pte G Jenkins, 15975 Pte A Brown, 16928 Pte W Bradley, 17171 Pte P Lambley.  Wounded to Duty:- 28743 Pte A Gibbons, 21548 Pte WH Wheeler.  Corpl E Grey and Pte WF Mace were buried in the Cemetery at LA TORTUE on the night of the 5th.  The Revd L Whitcombe officiated at the Burial.
