Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
William is listed as being killed in action on 31 Jul 1918. The War Diary for that day is transcribed below. As can be seen William was one of two officers killed most likely during the bombardments mentioned below.Lothian System - 31st: A quiet day. Aveluy Wood was bombarded for 2 periods of 20 minutes. No retaliation. The three American platoons attached to us for instruction returned in the evening and were replaced by 2 platoons which were attached to A and B Coys. Maj Lees & Lt Taylor killed. END
Aveluy Wood is just east of Martinsart and north of Albert in the Somme area.
It seems that William may have 'lied' about his age on enlistment when he gave his date of birth as 22 Feb 1882 when in fact he was born in 1878 and baptised on 22 Feb 1878.
