In March 1918 the 1st Life Guards became the 1st (Life Guards) Battalion of the Guards Machine Gun Regiment. More here. William was killed on 19th May 1918 during a sustained enemy Air raid on Etaples. The 1st Life Guards MGC war diary entry for 19th May is transcribed below. Etaples – 19 May 1918: Air raid over Etaples and district commencing about 10.30pm and lasting until 1am on the 20th.
