Circumstances of Death

Stanley is listed as dying of exposure in the trenches on 28th November 1915. The 9th Battalion war diary entries for the period 8th to 10th November are transcribed below and reveal that the men in trenches were soaked in heavy rain which flooded the trenches closely followed by a frost before they could dry their clothing. 

27 Nov 1915: Following the flooding of trenches frost set in putting the officers and men who were drenched in a very bad condition, not being able to dry their clothing.

Casualties – Officers wounded 1 & sick 1. OR wounded 7.

Effective strength Officers 16 & Other Ranks 680. 1 OR rejoined from hospital.

28 Nov 1915: Trenches occupied & parapets being repaired but men in a critical condition through exposure, several men dying of exposure.

Casualties: Officers Nil. OR Died 3 & wounded 1. Sick 48, 3 OR’s to Bde employ.

Effective strength Officers 16 & Other Ranks 625

29 Nov 1915: Same as yesterday. Frost still continues, men suffering from exposure.

Casualties: Officers Nil. OR Died 2 & wounded 3. Sick 45.
