Service History and Battalion

Unfortunately Reginald's service record does not survive and the following is compiled from various other sources.

  • Reginald enlisted in the 8th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment during the 30 days following 21 December 1914
  • He arrived in France with the 1st/8th Battalion on 22 March 1915
  • At some stage he was returned to the UK, most likely because he was wounded or became ill and was no longer fit to serve abroad
  • He was posted to the 81st Provisional Battalion which was a British home defence unit formed in 1915, composed of Territorial Force soldiers who had not volunteered or were unfit for overseas service. The Battalion was billeted at Southminster, Essex
  • Reginald's death certificate shows that he died in the Southminster Registration District having been run over by a car and suffering a fractured neck
  • He was later buried in Nether Whitacre St. Giles Cemetery and his brother Frank was later buried in the same grave
  • On 1st January 1917 the 81st Provisional Battalion became the 18th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment
