Stray Farm, Langemarck – 4 Oct 1917: Zero hour at 6am – Gun teams were distributed as follows:

2 Teams to right assaulting Battalion
2 Teams to left assaulting Battalion
8 Guns barrage work
2 Teams Flank Guard with two platoons of 1st E Lancs Regt
2 Teams to Stray Farm in reserve

The enemy put down a barrage at 5.45am and at 6am it was extremely heavy in the vicinity of White House and White Trench. The barrage machine guns suffered heavily – 3 guns were put out of action and 8 men killed & 16 wounded, Our own barrage as seen from Varna Farm was extremely good, all guns appeared to open together and dead to time.

At 3.30pm 2nd Seaforth Highlanders were seen to be retiring and SOS was sent up. Our barrage guns opened fire at ranges of 1500 yards and 2000 yards. The Seaforths were seen to advance a few minutes later. END
