Military Cross - Gazetted 14 Sep 1917 [Gazette]

2nd/Lt. Evan Harries Jones, R.F.A., Spec. Res. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when under heavy shell fire with his battery. Aware of the importance of keeping his guns in action in order to support an infantry attack by means of barrage, he moved from one gun to another urging the men 'to keep on firing, and by his cheerfulness and contempt of danger setting such a fine example that the guns continued firing for the whole of the appointed time.

Bar to Military Cross - Gazetted 16 Sep 1918 [Gazette]

2nd Lt. Evan Harries Jones, M.C., E.F.A.,Spec. Res. - For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer remained behind at his battery position at the telephone until the last gun and man had 'withdrawn, under continuous shell fire. He was then ordered to remain out as forward observation officer for another twenty-four hours, which he did in spite of fatigue and want of sleep, organising communications, and enabling fire to be brought to bear on parties of the enemy assembling for the attack.


 

Circumstances of Death

 

25th [April 1918]: Commencing about 2.30am the Germans opened a most intense bombardment and latterly advanced. Batteries were compelled to withdraw after hand to hand engagements more or less & A,C & D [Batteries] /87 together with B/88 lost heavily en?. The remaining four batteries were now grouped under Major Russell's command & withdrawn in the late afternoon to positions beyond Ouderdom
