Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Lewis is listed as dying of his wounds on 3 Jul 1917 and we believe from the War Diary casualty lists that he was both wounded and died on the same day. The war diary for 3 Jul 1917 is transcribed below:

"Map ref 51b.I.20.a - 3/7/17: Fine day, enemy artillery very active - also his aeroplanes. Fine night, our artillery bombarded the enemy's in our sector from 11.30pm to 12 midnight. END
