Samuel is listed as being killed in action on 8th April 1915 near Festubert. The 2nd Battalion war diary entry for the period 6th to 12th April 1915 is transcribed below. 6th – 12th April 1915 – In trenches near Festubert: A very quiet period. On 2 whole days no shelling whatsoever by enemy. Some successful sniping on our part on several occasions; one rifle with telescopic and one with magnifying sights (both private) found very useful. The new line of breastwork towards Section B3 completed by hurdle?. On 8th to 10th 3 Coys of 19th London Regt (T.F) shared duties with us in breastworks. On 11th & 12th a complete Coy of this Regt relieved one of ours in breastworks. Our relieved C into reserve near Regt HQ. On 7th April Reinforcements arrived, it consisted of 30 men under Captain Dillon. Casualties: 6 April - 2 killed & 1 wounded |
