It appears that Walter, who by now was a widower, was not truthful about his age at the time of enlistment which from official records was 43/44 when the upper age limit in 1915 was 38
Circumstances of Death

Walter is listed as being killed in action on 27 Mar 1917. The battalion war diary for that day is transcribed below. Templeux la Fosse - 27 March 1917: In the morning B Company made an attack on high ground in E.20.b&d and drove off the enemy holding the ridge causing some casualties. The remainder of the enemy fled and were captured or halted by Cavalry Patrols operating on our flanks.Our losses were 3 killed and 3 wounded including 1 Officer (Capt Field). D Company moved from Driewcourt & took over outpost line from B Company & pushed forward patrols to E.21 central and E.15 central. C Company moved up in support and dug in linesbehind D Company. B Company returned to billets in Templeux la Fosse. |
