George is listed as being killed in action on 28 May 1917. The war diary entry for that day is transcribed below and appears to show that he was killed by a shell hitting their billets.

Neuve Eglise - May 28:

9.12am - 63 rounds into Messines - special bombardment

12.50pm - 400 rounds for wire cutting NW of Schnitzel Farm

8.13pm - 64 rounds into Messines - special bombardment

8.30pm - Shell into Billet 1 OR killed (George) and 1 OR wounded. END
