Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Albert died of his wounds that were incurred prior to his death during the heavy fighting over many days near Albert in the first phase of the Battle of the Somme. It has not been possible to identify which day he was wounded but the battalion spend a number of days near Contalmaison Wood. At the time the 36th, 38th, and 2/2nd London Casualty Clearing Stations were based at Heilly Station and he would have been treated and later died at one of them.
