Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Joseph is listed as being killed on 23 Jul 1916 which was the first day of the Battle of Pozieres during the Battle of the Somme. The war diary for that day places the battalion to the west of Pozieres and the diary is transcribed below:
 
"12.30am Battalion attaxcked A Coy on right, D on the left, B in support and C in reserve. For full account of the operations see Appendix. Objective on right reached almost at once and the left after a hard struggle and at least two counter attacks repulsed.
 
4.00am Reinforced by two Coys 4th R Berks Regt. Heavy shelling all day but no further attacks. In the afternoon it became evident that Battn had suffered heavily and information was received that Battn would be relieved by a Bttn of 143 Bde.
 
Relieved by 1/5 R. Warwicks after midnight on 23/24 Jul 1916. Coys moved as relieved to field outside Albert, the last party getting in abour 2.30am. Total casualties 230" [including Joseph].
