Circumstances of Death

Ralph is listed as being killed on 29th May 1918 and was orginally buried in a battlefield grave at Jonehery-sur-Vesle (Burial Record) before his remains were moved to Marfaux on or about 14 Jan 1920.

Ralph Bonfoy Rooper the second son of Mr and Mrs P.L Rooper, Little Court Speldhurst was born at Chester, July 3rd 1894. He was educated at Charterhouse and New College Oxford, where he was an Undergraduate and a Scholar of his College at the time of the declaration of War.

In April 1915 he joined the “Friends Ambulance Unit” and served as Motor Ambulance Driver with that body and with the Scottish Branch of the Croix Rouge Francaise in the years 1915, 1917 and 1918. Edit: He first entered France on 24 Apr 1915 [Medal Card]

He was rejected for the Army on account of his health and served for some time in 1916 in the Ministry of Munitions and the Admiralty. He went out again to France in May 1917 and was present at various actions near Poperinghe, Ypres, Soissons and Rheims. He was killed at Gueux near Rheims on May 29th 1918 while acting as Conducteur SSA of the Croix Rouge Francaise. He was awarded the “Croix de Geurre avec Palme” and is buried at Marvaux near Rheims.
