Circumstances of Death

Richard is listed as being killed in action on 4 April 1916 and the war diary for that day is transcribed below.

3rd Apr 1916. Front line trenches E of Potijze. Right Battalion left Brigade. Beautiful hot fine morning. Further successes at St ELOI reported. Battalion left Camp B by train at 19:00. Germans shell railway which delayed train. Detrained North at ASYLUM at 20:20 and marched up to line by Platoons via MENIN GATE to relieve 1st Battalion Irish Guards. A.5.a. much damaged by bombardment of 3rd March also X4, X5, DUKE STREET also bad and wet. Relief complete by 22:30.

4th Apr 1916. As before. Germans knocked out a machine gun killing a machine gunman by HE shell during the night. Misty morning; much colder; observation difficult. Artillery of Corps carried out a programme from 10:30 but were ordered to discontinue about 13:30. Accident owing to premature explosion of Pippin Rifle grenade. (1 Sgt killed [Richard], 1 wounded). Lt F E H PAGET sick with shell shock.
