John is listed as dying of wounds on 13 Oct 1916. The 1st/6th Battalion War diary shows that on the 13th they were in the trenches at Hebuterne and suffered casualties of 1 dead and 7 wounded 3 of whom died later. He would have been taken to either the 20th or 43rd Casualty Clearing Stations which were based at Warlincourt. The very brief war diary entries for the period 1 Oct 1916 to 16 Oct 1916 are transcribed below. Bayencourt 1/10/16: In billets, finding working parties in Hebuterne sector Bayencourt 2/10/16:In billets, A Coy attached to 1st/5th R War R. Reinforcement 2 OR. Bayencourt 3/10/16:In billets, finding working parties in Hebuterne sector Chateau Le Haie 4/10/16: HQ and 3 Coys moved to Chateau Le Haie St. Amand 5/10/16: Moved to billets at St. Amand. A Coy rejoined the battalion. St. Amand 6/10/16: Training St. Amand 7/10/16: Training. 2nd Lt Surman and 6 OR reinforcement St. Amand 8/10/16: Training St. Amand 9/10/16: Training St. Amand 10/10/16: Training. Reinforcement 4 OR St. Amand 11/10/16: Training Hebuterne 12/10/16: Relieved 1st/7th Worcester Regt in Hebuterne left sector - one company in line, one in Hebuterne. HQ's and 2 Coys in Fonquevillers, attached to 144th Infantry Brigade. Hebuterne 13/10/16: In trenches. Casualties 1 killed 7 wounded (of which 3 later died) Hebuterne 14/10/16: In trenches.
