Circumstances of Death

Army records show that Henry was admitted to the No 3 Casualty Clearing Station at Puchevillers with gunshot wounds on 14th November 1916. He died of those same wounds later on the same day. The 14th Battalion war diary entry for the 14th November is transcribed below and suggests that Henry might have been wounded by heavy shell fire.

[Map Ref] Q.32.b.4.4 - 14 Nov 1916: 2nd Lt Graham’s party returned from the Divisional Track about 12.30am.

Capt. Brazier with his half Coy returned from Hamel Dump about 2am. He reported that there was no work for him to do and acting on Major Revell’s orders he returned to camp.

Capt. Coster with his half Coy returned about 5am after working on the Green Line.

Capt. Rowe with his half Coy returned at 5.45am after working under Major Revell on the Green Line. Owing to heavy shelling etc it was impossible for him to work on the strong points at Beaucourt Station for which intention he had originally set out.

Capt. Tweddle with his Coy returned about 5am after working on the Green Line.

Capt. Tweddle with the whole of A Coy set out at 9.30am for Beaucourt for the purpose of putting same in a state of defence.

2/Lt Roper and 27 other ranks of B Coy left camp at 3.50pm for work under Lt Stewart on Divisional Track.

Capt. Brazier with his half Coy moved off at 4pm for work on Hamel-Beaucourt road
