Previous Service History

  • 27 May 1902 - Enlisted at Pvt 8699 Royal Warwickshire Regiment in Warwick
  • 04 May 1904 - Discharged from the Army from being incorrigible and worthless!
  • 01 Apr 1911 - Was back in the Army as a Gunner with the 52nd Battery, RFA in India

Circumstances of Death

Thomas is listed as dying of wounds on 9th May 1915. A comrade wrote to Thomas' sister said "He was terribly knocked about. His right leg and left arm being practically blown off. It was wonderful how he showed such patience because he knew, poor fellow, that he had no chance of recovery. He asked for a cigarette and lingered nearly two hours without once complaining".

The 1st Brigade war diary entries for the period 8th to 10th May are transcribed below.

East of Ypres – 8.5.1915: 132nd was placed Hors de Combat [out of action due to injury or damage] by two salvos from German 5.9 guns and withdrawn at night.

1 killed; 9 wounded

East of Ypres – 9.5.1915: Fairly quiet. 4 killed, 18 wounded

East of Ypres – 10.5.1915: Germans shelled 3rd K.R.R’s out of their trenches in Hooge Chateau Wood and they fell back to eastern edge.

The whole line of Infantry trenches from Hooge to Verlurenhoek was heavily shelled.

Major Stephenson DSO, 98th Battery was severely wounded and the 98th Battery so badly shelled that it was withdrawn at night and the 99th Battery  brought into action between the railway and the Menin Road.
