Circumstances of Death

George is listed as being killed in action on 29th January 1915. The 4th Battalion war diary entry for the 29th January 1915 is transcribed below.

St. Eloi - 29 Jan 1915: The morning passed without event. About 1pm to 2pm the enemy bombarded the section of French trenches adjoining our left with high explosive shells. The[y succeeded in blowing in some 3- - 40 yards of this trench & causing about 24 casualties forced the French to evacuate this part of the line.

At dark the French immediately reoccupied this part and started to put it into a state of defense.

Towards midnight heavy firing (gun & rifle) was heard in the Trois Rois section but it died down in about a quarter of an hour.

2/Lt L.H.S.A. King was very slightly wounded in the forearm during in his trench.

Casualties: 4 killed – 1 officer & 3 wounded.
