Circumstances of Death

Ernest is listed as being killed in action on 18th April 1918. The 16th Battalion war diary entrie for period 16th to 19th April are transcribed below along with a trench map which plots the map points mentioned in the diary. The war diary does not give any description of the events of that day.

Near St. Vanant – 16 Apr 1918: 15th Infantry Brigade OO [Operations Order] received saying Battalion would relieve 3 Coys 1st D.C.L.I & 1 Coy 12th Gloucesters tonight.

Near St. Vanant – 17 Apr 1918: Relief complete. Bn in support to Bde with 1st Norfolk on right and 1st Cheshire’s on left with 1st Bedfords in reserve.

Message from Bde to say support line will be organised from K.14.d.6.5 to K.15.d.4.4 K.15.a.5.5 on Canal to K.15.a.5.9, K.9.c.8.8 – K.3.c.1.5.

A continuous breastwork will be made & the line wired from the 18th – 21st Bn was employed on the above work.

Near St. Vanant – 18 Apr 1918: Message to say the Div commander considers that the work done on Div line by the 15th Inf Bde as excellent & wishes all troops congratulated on their good work.

Congratulations were also received from Brigadier General RLJ Oldman DSO on the work done by the Battalion.

Near St. Vanant – 19 Apr 1918: No war diary entry was made on this day
