Circumstances of Death

Horace is listed as being killed in action on 18th August 1918 and the 107th Battery (23rd Brigade) war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

Maricourt – 18 Aug 1916 - 1.30am: 107th Battery had two telephonists killed and one wounded (died subsequently) by stray shell.

10.30am: Direct hit by 5.9” Shell's on No1 Gun D/23. Two Gunners killed and two wounded.

2.45pm: attack by 24th, 3rd and 153rd (French) Divisions On German trenches between Guillemont & Angle Wood. 4 phases.

D/23 fire 5 k shell at Leuze Wood. Infantry reported to have reached objective.

6.30pm: Strong enemy counter attack from direction of Guillemont, 3rd and 4th phases of operation cancelled.
