Circumstances of Death

Frank is listed as dying of wounds on 13th August 1918 at an advanced aid post of the 110th Field Ambulance situated east of Eecke, Belgium. The 15th Battalion war diary entries for the period 12th to 14th August are transcribed below. Franks remains were buried in nearby Bertenacre. Reserve – 12 Aug 1918: Except for shelling in Rifle Range Wood day quiet. About 9.30pm enemy threw about 30 Gas shells in same locality – 2 casualties (slight) B Coy, One platoon, on way up to work were gas shelled – Casualties 2/Lt McCrea and 4 other ranks (rather badly). Major McCallam, DSO arrived. Reserve – 13 Aug 1918: Very quiet. Senlac Farm shelled – 2 5.9’s dropped immediately in rear of farm. Casualties 2 killed, 4 wounded - 1 shell shock. Large number of Gas shells thrown into R.34.d. 11.30pm: Working parties had to move to right to prevent casualties, several slight cases of gas in Battalion Reserve – 14 Aug 1918: Day very quiet, several men went down, slightly gassed. 2/Lt’s Irons and O.H.H. Nuttall reported back from leave. |
