Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
The war diary states that on the day Alfred was killed (30 May 1916) the battalion were in the Brigade reserve at Croix Barbee when at 8.30pm the Germans opened up an artillery barrage on the Brigade front lines at Neuve Chapelle followed by an attack on the part of the line held by the 15th Sherwood Foresters. Parts of the battalion were sent forward to support the front lines and assisted in repulsing the enemy attack. Alfred was killed during these events.
