Circumstances of Death

Harold is listed as being killed in action on 4th October 1917. The 8th Battalion war diary entries for the period 3rd to 5th October are transcribed below.

Shrewsbury Forest sector - 3.10.17: Continuous shelling. 2 Coys 4th Middlesex sent up to front line & occupied support trenches with C Coy.

Shrewsbury Forest sector - 4.10.17: Battalion attacked at 6am. Attack unsuccessful. Casualties heavy (4 officers killed, 2 officers missing). 2 Coys 4th Middlesex occupied front line with remnants of A, B & D Coys.

Dispositions in attack were as follows: D Coy on left, B centre, D right. Somersets on right, 111th Brigade (KRR’s) on left. Attack on left carried out by 10th Royal Fusiliers.

Result: D Coy reached & apparently crossed road on left but had to retire. A Coy did not reach road. Enemy in great force at Jute Cott, Berry Cotts and Hamp Farm met attack with heavy machine gun fire and bombs. Our barrage very poor.

In the evening 2 Coys 10th York & Lancs Regt went up to re-inforce front line. Orders issued for attack and capture of junction in Tower Trench.

Shrewsbury Forest sector - 5.10.17: The attack on Tower Trench not being feasible posts were advanced north of Jute Cotts to within 50 yards of German line.
