Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
His Circumstances of Death card states:"Killed in Action" "While taking part with his battalion in an attack in Caix and shortly after reaching the objective, he was shot in the abdomen by an enemy sniper. His wound was dressed by stretcher bearers and he was carried to the Regimental Aid Post but died shortly after"
Private John Bird of Ladbroke was killed nearby on the day.

Please note - we are unable to confirm the above information personal information with any certainty.
- John's baptism record gives no details of his parents just noting he was illegitimate
- By the 1911 census John is no longer living with the Duckett family and was perhaps in Canada by then, he would have been 18yrs old
- His attestation papers in Canada list John Duckett as his foster father
- We are speculating that the Duckett family took John in and had him baptised but had no idea who his parents were. They knew he was illegitimate so quite possibly fostered from an orphanage. But again that is just an educated guess.
