Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Frank died of his wounds at one of the German medical units that used Caudry Cemetery. We believe that he was wounded north of Albert on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. The battalion formed up at Mailly to advance NW towards Serre which was held up south of Serre by heavy machine gun fire. Red Cross records show that he died in German hands and was buried at Caudry. Frank was one of the 120 men who were listed as killed or missing, there were also another 316 men who were woundedon 1 Jul 1916. The war diary records no further actions or casualties between the 1st and 6th July
