Walter is listed as being killed in action on 28th March 1918. The 8th Battalion war diary entries for the period 25th March to 29th March are transcribed below. Grevillers – 25 Mar 1918: Enemy attacked 4 times. 19th Division fought a rear guard action from Grevillers through Irles and Miraumont to a line Puisieux – Achiet le Petit. Fonquevillers - 26 Mar 1918: Rearguard action continued to a line Hebuterne – Bucquoy which was reached in the early morning and held. 19th Division became Division Reserve between Bayencourt and Fonquevillers. Fonquevillers - 27 Mar 1918: Battalion in support to Anzacs before Fonquevillers. Enemy held by fresh troops. Doullens - 28 Mar 1918: The Battalion withdrew to neighbourhood of Doullens. Casualties Killed: 2 Officers and 3 OR’s; Wounded 9 Officers and 169 Other Ranks Doullens – 29 Mar 1918: Entrained for Strazeele |
