Circumstances of Death

Cecil is listed as being killed in action on 20 Aug 1916. The 1st/8th Battalion War diary entries for the 20th & 21st Aug 1916 are transcribed below.

Ovillers Post – 20.8.16: Battalion attached to 144 Bde, A & C Coys held Ratio Trench, B & D Coys in Ovillers Dugouts and Keep the two later Coys (B&D) provided carrying parties & D Coy in addition provided a working party  from 1am to about 9am on 21st.

Casualties 1 Killed 9 wounded. Reinforcements 16 OR.

Ovillers Post – 21.8.16: D Coy provided digging party. Both Ratio and Skyline Trench were shelled consistently during the night, also found 79? where a shell ignited some paraffin tins and exploded some rockets. 13 wounded. Reinforcements 16 OR.
