Circumstances of Death

Leonard is listed as dying of his wounds on 29 Jun 1916. The 2nd Battalion war diary records that he was badly wounded at midnight on 23rd July 1916 by a German bomb [hand grenade] while is was part of a covering party in of the trenches at La Gorgue. The covering party was protecting a working party when enemy troops threw a bomb (grenade) into the crater Leonard was in which also wounded 1 other rank. Leonard died 6 days later in No 7 General Hospital, St. Omer.
