Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
Harry is listed as being killed in action on 3 Jun 1917. A summary of the 20th Bn DLI war diary shows that Harry was attached to the Royal Engineers when he was killed
- 1 Jun 1917 - Battalion relieved in the lines by 26th Bn Royal Fusiliers. Casualties 3 wounded while pulling out of the lines.
- 2 Jun 1917 - Battalion in Woodcote Camp - Bathing, Clothing fitting, Boxing Competition. Casualties 6 Other Ranks attached to 233 Field Coy, R.E [see below].
- 3 Jun 1917 - Battalion in Woodcote Camp - Church parade and inspection. Casualties Nil
- 4 Jun 1917 - Woodcote Camp - Part of battalion on working parties. Casualties Nil
- 5 Jun 1917 - Woodcote Camp - Inter-company sports were held, all platoons and companies being well represented in all the events and at the end a prize-giving took place.
Further investigation of the 233rd Field Company, Royal Engineers war diary [see 2 Jun above] finds that it records on the 3 Jun 1917, that six (6) other ranks of the 20th D.L.I attached to the Company were killed in action. No further details are added.
The war diary states that 233rd Field Company were at Rozenhill and the diary entry is transcribed below:
Rozenhill - 1st to 6th [June 1917] - Work continued on Forward area reclaiming R. Line Front Line and Old R Line between Shelley Lane and St Eloi Voormezeele Road. Construction of R.A.P's [Regimental Aid Posts - see below] in Convent Lane & Shelley Lane and also travel trench to New Left Bde HQTS on the left of Convent Lane. END
Regimental Aid Post (RAP) was close to the front line, such as in a dugout (a hole dug in the side of a trench). Here light wounds would be treated so that soldiers could return to the front line. Those who needed more treatment were moved on to a dressing station
