Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Edward is listed as dying of wounds on 28 May 1915 in Romain. The war diary shows he was wounded on the 26th May and the period 26th May to 28th May is transcribed below. Edward was shot in the head and died two days later in Romarin [Casualty] Clearing Station.

Romarin 26/5/1915: In billets till 6pm

6pm: Battalion relieved Bucks Battalion in St. Yves trenches. A Coy no 33 trench, B Coy Support, C Coy No 35 & 36 trenches, D Coy 34 trench.
Strength: 27 Officers, 935 other ranks
Casualties: No 2751 Pte T.B. Curtis B Coy slightly wounded
                 No 22566 Pte E Coulthard D Coy severely wounded in the head. END

Ploegsteert Wood 27/5/1915: In trenches at St. Yves. Quite day
Casualties: Pte C. Greenwood (C Coy) wounded
                 Pte H J Yeates (C Coy) wounded slight. END

Ploegsteert Wood 28/5/1915: In trenches at St. Yves. Quiet day. Pte T Vicary wounded, Pte Coulthard died at Romain clearing station and was buried in Battalion cemetery Ploegsteert Wood. END
