Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

A newspaper report in the Rugby Advertiser on 29 May 1915 quotes a letter dated 28 Apr 1915 from a Lt Taylor as saying that John was acting as his medical orderly when he was wounded in the stomach while going to aid of a wounded comrade. Lt. Taylor said that he had attended him straight away and taken him to hospital.

The 146th Brigade war diary reveals that on 28 Apr 1915 the Brigade was at Zonnebeke supporting 85th Infantry Brigade. The only actions mentioned do not appear to have involved HQ Batteries nor does it reflect John being wounded going to the aid of a wounded colleague.

"The two sections of 366 & 367 facing E supported an attack by 85th Inf Bde on a trench where the enemy had established themselves"

"The 149 Battery withdrew in daylight. During this withdrawal the battery had to cross about 3/4 mile of open ground in full view of the enemy. It was done at a gallop under shell fire with only one casualty".

The diary for the previous and next days makes no mention of casualties. John was the first of the 38 men of Kineton who died to be killed during WW1.
